What Took Me So Long?
It’s funny how easy it is to get set in our ways and refuse to budge. I’ve been a PHP/MySQL programmer for about five years now. I was so comfortable in this environment I figured there wasn’t really any point in looking into anything else. By “anything else” I of course mean the very hip and cool Ruby on Rails which, really does live up to its hype. To familiarize myself with the language and framework I decided to recode a tiny list manager I made for myself a while back. The project in PHP/MySQL took a week and a half, the project in Ruby on Rails took two weeks, with massive extensions in functionality.
Along with Ruby on Rails, I also ventured out of my routine to finally try Netflix. Netflix is beyond any doubt vastly superior to Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. And since I worked at both of the movie rental giants, I feel like I am qualified to make that claim.
These two things took very little time and money to try out, but have added quite a bit of enjoyment to my life. So, what took me so long?
